Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@mamakaycreates.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

As I create your quilt, I’ll check in with questions so we can make decisions together and ensure it turns out exactly how you want.  Here is a list of quilt components that we will talk about:

Design -This is what the quilt will look like when finished.  We will determine block sizes, overall color theme of the quilt, sashing, binding, backing and quilting motif.

Block size - This is the size of the square.  The size of the blocks and the number of the blocks is a component to determine the size of the quilt.

Sashing - These are the strips that can go in between the blocks.  You can choose to have sashing or no sashing in your quilt.

Quilt Top - The completed top of the quilt before any work is done to join the layers of the quilt.

Batting - This is the inner layer of the quilt.  I use Warm and Natural cotton batting.

Backing - This is the fabric that is used for the back of the quilt.  You can pick any style of cotton fabric for this.  We can use fabric that is used on the front of the quilt or you can pick what ever fabric you feel works best with your quilt.

Quilting -  The purpose of quilting a quilt is both functional and expressive.

At its most basic level, quilting holds the quilt together. The stitching secures the quilt top, batting, and backing into a single, durable piece, preventing shifting, bunching, and wear over time. Proper quilting improves the quilt’s strength, longevity, and washability.

Quilting also adds texture, structure, and comfort. The stitches create dimension and softness, helping the quilt drape well and feel cozy while regulating warmth by controlling how the batting behaves.

Beyond function, quilting is a key design element. The pattern, density, and direction of the stitching enhance the overall look of the quilt—highlighting piecing, adding movement, and reinforcing the quilt’s character.

Binding - Once the quilt has been quilted, the quilt needs to be bound. Quilt binding is the fabric edge finish that wraps around the outer perimeter of a quilt. It secures the raw edges of the quilt layers, protecting them from wear while providing a clean, polished finish. Binding can be subtle or decorative, often coordinating with the quilt design to frame the piece and complete it both structurally and visually.

Throughout the quilt‑making process, we’ll work together to make thoughtful decisions about each component—ensuring your quilt is both beautifully designed and carefully finished to reflect your vision.

Here's my process:

You bring me your shirts and you share your ideas for how you'd like the quilt to look. We can talk general design and color schemes at our initial meeting.

I then take photos of the shirts and upload them into my quilt design software.  I come up with a few ideas for you.  Keep in mind, you are in charge and I include you as much as you'd like within the design process.  We don't stop designing until you are happy with how it looks.

After that, I get to work.  Your cost includes everything from the design time to a completed quilt.  I do 100% of my own work and I do not send it out.

Timing: After we finalize the design and gather all materials, your quilt typically takes about 2 weeks to complete. I’m currently scheduling new projects about 2 months ahead, so reaching out early is the best way to secure a spot and allow plenty of time for your project.

If you have any other questions - please let me know!
